How to Design an Indoor Swimming PoolHow to Design an Indoor Swimming Pool
Indoor swimming pool are a wonderful way to enjoy the water all year round, and they can be designed in many styles. They can be added to an existing home, like the basement pool built in this beautiful home by Lindye Galloway Design, or factored into a new build to create a luxurious space for relaxation and exercise. The key to success is an experienced pool builder who is well-versed in the unique needs of this type of environment.
The Advantages of an Indoor Swimming Pool for Year-Round Enjoyment
One major issue is the high humidity that can quickly lead to mold, corrosion and fungal skin infections in swimmers if not addressed properly. Dehumidification systems are a good solution, but they must be carefully designed to ensure that the air is not forced across the water surface or else it can speed up evaporation. Builders also use special waterproof construction materials to protect the walls from moisture damage. Proper deck drainage is important, too: Using low-profile strip drains in lieu of hub drains reduces puddling on the pool floor and contributes to lower humidity levels.
The most important step, though, is to ensure that chlorine levels are properly managed and that they do not exceed the EPA’s threshold for disinfection. Pools with too much combined chlorine are not effective at fighting germs and can actually cause harmful side effects for swimmers, including respiratory ailments. Manual and mechanical systems are available for testing and treating the water, but they can be costly and time consuming, and they can produce chemical byproducts that have their own negative side effects.
